_module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Thermoduric bacteria \u2013 heat-resistant, spore-forming bacteria that can survive pasteurisation and cause serious problems for milk processors \u2013 are also more likely to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these risks, many cleaning routines on UK farms are both ineffective and inefficient and need closer attention.<\/p>\n<p>It is critical that a regular, monitored routine is followed by all staff involved in the plant\u2010cleaning operation, Mr Ohnstad suggests.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][dsm_dual_heading before_text=&#8221;Cleaning protocol&#8221; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Clean the parlour using low-pressure water to remove muck and debris from liners, clusters, long milk and pulse tubes.<\/p>\n<p>A common mistake is to clean the external surfaces of milking equipment after the hot water cleaning cycle has begun.<\/p>\n<p>This can bake faecal material to the surfaces, making it far more difficult to remove, says Mr Ohnstad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother reason to avoid applying cold water to the outside of a metal pipe is that it will significantly reduce the temperature of the water being circulated inside,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Maintaining a sufficiently high temperature to reduce bacteria and milk residues in the pipe is critical, so this attempt to save time is ineffective and wastes the energy used to heat the water.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.zirveyiz.biz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/sag\u0306imhane-bakimi-ve-hijyen-ic\u0327in-neler-yapmak-gerekir.jpg&#8221; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Then a three-phase cleaning cycle should begin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.1. Pre-rinse to remove milky residues.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This should be carried out using tepid water at about 30-40C at a rate of 12-15 litres per milking point, allowing this to run to waste.<\/p>\n<p>If hot water volumes are limited, use cold water for the pre-rinse rather than compromising the temperature and volume of the hot circulation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.2. Circulation to remove fats, proteins and minerals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This requires a total of 15 litres of water per milking point, heated to 77-85C.<\/p>\n<p>First, allow five litres per milking point of hot water at 85C to go straight through the plant to the drain.<\/p>\n<p>This is to begin cleaning the system and heat the metal pipework \u2013 much like warming a teapot, explains Mr Ohnstad.<\/p>\n<p>The warmed metalwork will help maintain water temperatures in the following phase.<\/p>\n<p>The main circulation should supply 10 litres of water per milking point for about 6-8 minutes ensuring the final circulation temperature is greater than 55C. Cleaning chemicals should be added at this stage.<\/p>\n<p>Once the circulation is established, every jetter should be checked and a visual inspection should be carried out at all milking points to ensure adequate solution flow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.3. Final rinse \u2013 to remove chemicals from the plant, preventing milk contamination.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a cold rinse at about 15 litres per milking point. If mains water is used there is no need to add a disinfectant to the final rinse.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][dsm_dual_heading before_text=&#8221;Tips on improving cleaning efficency&#8221; middle_text=&#8221; &#8221; before_background_color=&#8221;#EDF000&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; before_text_color=&#8221;#000000&#8243;][\/dsm_dual_heading][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Beneath the practical cleaning steps there are four key components that underpin a successful parlour routine, suggests David Horton, UK sales manager for Deosan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][dsm_dual_heading before_text=&#8221; Water quality and mechanical action&#8221; middle_text=&#8221; &#8221; before_background_color=&#8221;RGBA(0,0,0,0)&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; before_font_size=&#8221;24px&#8221; border_color_all_before=&#8221;#000000&#8243; border_width_bottom_before=&#8221;2px&#8221; border_style_bottom_before=&#8221;dotted&#8221; border_width_left_before=&#8221;13px&#8221; border_color_left_before=&#8221;#EDF000&#8243;][\/dsm_dual_heading][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>The starting point is to ensure that water is of drinking quality, ideally from the mains.<\/p>\n<p>Where water is drawn from private boreholes it is wise to test the supply regularly to ensure pathogens are not introduced.<\/p>\n<p>With a consistent class-one supply achieved, water should be drawn through the system with a vigorous, mechanical action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCleaning should not be a quiet, docile affair,\u201d says Mr Horton. \u201cMilk pipes should jostle as a slug of water is forced through the pipes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This slug is created by the impulse system \u2013 a controlled injection of air.<\/p>\n<p>It is particularly important for modern set-ups with a large-bore pipe for the slug to contact both the top and bottom internal surfaces to remove milk residues and bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>Checking water volumes, to ensure target quantities are being met, can be achieved by catching water in buckets at the end of each stage as it is pumped through the delivery line to the drain, Mr Horton says.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][dsm_dual_heading before_text=&#8221; Chemical use&#8221; middle_text=&#8221; &#8221; before_background_color=&#8221;RGBA(0,0,0,0)&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; before_font_size=&#8221;24px&#8221; border_color_all_before=&#8221;#000000&#8243; border_width_bottom_before=&#8221;2px&#8221; border_style_bottom_before=&#8221;dotted&#8221; border_width_left_before=&#8221;13px&#8221; border_color_left_before=&#8221;#EDF000&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221;][\/dsm_dual_heading][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span>Chemical cleaners are needed to tackle bacteria and should be selected with advice based on the installed system.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chemicals are particularly important in reducing thermoduric bacteria which resist the action of the raised water temperature.<\/p>\n<p>Active ingredients are manufactured to operate at a prescribed temperature and dose rate. It is also the key area where energy costs are wasted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The important thing to remember is: don\u2019t assume the gauge on the water heater is correct.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An additional digital thermometer, the type with a sensor at the end of a wire, can be used with the tank lid on. This should be checked routinely, advises Mr Horton.<\/p>\n<p>Checking the water temperature throughout the system is also critical. This can be achieved using temperature-sensitive stickers on piping and, at the exit pipe, by drawing water into a bucket and using a digital thermometer.<\/p>\n<p>Where heat losses occur, it may be that the parlour is older or poorly maintained and cold air is being drawn in at joints and seals.<\/p>\n<p>Insulation may also have broken down over time.
